England’s men’s cricket players are now subject to updated behavioral standards that strongly advise against alcohol consumption on the days immediately preceding, during, or following any match. If a Test match lasts the full five days, this recommendation extends to the subsequent day. These rules follow a high-profile incident involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson at a London nightclub, which highlighted confusion regarding existing midnight curfews.
Under the revised policy, the midnight curfew remains mandatory throughout every series, whether domestic or international. While head coach Brendon McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key retain the authority to waive these rules for celebrations or traditional post-series social events, the guidance aims to prioritize player recovery and professional standards. Furthermore, should players choose to drink, the updated protocols mandate that it must not happen in public spaces. Private consumption is also discouraged to assist with preparation.
Additional requirements stipulate that players must notify security or management if they leave their hotel after 10:00 PM. Public displays of intoxication and social media posts featuring alcohol-related activities are strictly prohibited. These measures follow a series of disciplinary issues that previously led to investigations involving Stokes and Atkinson. While the pair were cleared of violent conduct following their nightclub appearance, they were found to have breached contractual obligations, prompting this formal clarification of team expectations.
