Venezuela death toll surpasses 3,800 following twin earthquakes

The confirmed death toll from Venezuela’s June 24 twin earthquakes has reached 3,889, as the government seeks international financial assistance for recovery efforts.

Following the major seismic events that hit Venezuela on June 24, government figures released on Thursday confirm that the number of fatalities has climbed to 3,889. The twin earthquakes, which registered magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, also left approximately 17,000 individuals injured and rendered nearly 18,000 people homeless.

National Assembly leader Jorge Rodriguez provided the updated casualty count via Telegram. In response to the devastation, interim leader Delcy Rodriguez has urged the international community to unlock frozen Venezuelan assets. Simultaneously, the United Nations is seeking $300 million in aid for relief efforts, and the country is currently in discussions with the IMF to access restricted financial resources.

The coastal region of La Guaira remains the most severely affected area, with 190 total building collapses and over 800 structures damaged. While official search and rescue operations have largely concluded two weeks post-disaster, grieving families continue to search the wreckage. Individuals like Ciro Ocando, who is personally excavating rubble in Playa Grande, remain committed to recovering their missing family members despite the grim reality of the situation.
