Charley Hull starts strong at Evian Championship despite ice cream confusion

Charley Hull is three strokes behind the leader at the Evian Championship after carding a 66, while world number one Nelly Korda struggles early on.

Charley Hull has positioned herself well at the Evian Championship in France, currently sitting three shots behind the leader after an impressive opening round. While spectators noted Hull holding an ice cream on the 15th hole, she clarified that the snack belonged to her caddie, Adam Woodward, and she was merely holding it while he attended to her clubs.

Despite a difficult start in the heat, where she was two over par through six holes, Hull rallied to record a five-under-par 66. This performance marks her joint-lowest score in the opening round of a major tournament. Hull, who has been managing recent injuries, noted that the warm weather conditions actually aided her movement on the course.

Aki Iwai of Japan leads the field at eight under par, holding a two-shot advantage over France’s Perrine Delacour. Hull shares third place with three other competitors. Meanwhile, world number one Nelly Korda faces a challenging road ahead, tied for 99th place after an opening round of 74. Other English players, Lottie Woad and Cara Gainer, also started strongly, ending the day at four under par.
