The Mexico national football team has returned a collection of luxury Rolex watches provided to them by YouTuber Stephen Deleonardis, also known as Stevewilldoit. Deleonardis reportedly invested $1 million in the timepieces, intending them as gifts for the team’s entire roster and coaching staff.
The exchange occurred on Monday ahead of the squad’s successful last-32 match against Ecuador. However, FIFA guidelines strictly regulate such donations. Article 21 of the FIFA Code of Ethics mandates that any accepted gifts must possess only nominal or symbolic worth.
In a statement posted to social media, the team confirmed that the decision to return the items was made by mutual agreement, noting that the influencer had acted entirely on his own accord. The Mexican squad is currently preparing for a match against England at the Azteca Stadium, as they aim to progress to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1986.
