Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has praised Cristiano Ronaldo following the forward’s first-ever goal in a FIFA World Cup knockout stage match. The historic moment occurred during Portugal’s 2-1 win over Croatia this past Thursday.
At 41 years old, Ronaldo set a new record as the oldest athlete to both appear in and score during a knockout game at the tournament. Portugal secured their spot in the Round of 16 thanks to goals from Ronaldo and Goncalo Ramos, which proved enough to overcome Ivan Perisic’s effort for Croatia.
Ferdinand, who previously shared the pitch with Ronaldo at Manchester United, expressed his admiration on social media. He posted a message directed at the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, writing, “This is what he does!!!! @Cristiano,” accompanied by a goat emoji.
Ronaldo has tallied three goals so far in this World Cup. The Al-Nassr player now turns his focus toward Portugal’s upcoming Round of 16 encounter against Spain.
