Chelsea Secure Atalanta Defender Marco Palestra in £47m Deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of 21-year-old Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £47m, marking the first major arrival of the Xabi Alonso era.

Chelsea have officially signed Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra for a fee reaching £47m, including various add-ons. The 21-year-old, who made his international debut for Italy during the World Cup play-off against Northern Ireland, has committed to a six-year contract with an additional one-year option. He is the first acquisition for the club since Xabi Alonso took charge as manager.

Although Palestra was close to a deal with his former club, Inter Milan, Chelsea secured his signature by outbidding them and offering more competitive wages. Palestra expressed his excitement about joining the London side and working under Alonso, noting the high quality of the current squad.

Following an impressive loan spell at Cagliari where he earned the title of Serie A defender of the year, Palestra arrives at Stamford Bridge with a reputation for attacking prowess and versatility. Opta statistics show he led all defenders in Europe’s top leagues in successful dribbles and winning fouls in the final third last season.

Looking ahead, Chelsea are reportedly prioritizing the recruitment of a centre-back, with Maxence Lacroix of Crystal Palace identified as a potential target. Meanwhile, the club is managing several departures and player interest from other teams, including potential moves involving Enzo Fernandez and Trevoh Chalobah, as the squad undergoes a significant transition after a disappointing 10th-place finish last season.
