Australian prop Angus Bell is preparing to face his former club teammates when the Wallabies host Ireland in the opening Nations Championship match on July 4 in Sydney. The 25-year-old recently completed an eight-month stint with Ulster, having joined on a temporary contract from the Waratahs. His tenure concluded following the Challenge Cup final in Bilbao last May.
The Ireland squad features ten players currently signed to Ulster, including Robert Baloucoune, Stuart McCloskey, Jacob Stockdale, and Nathan Doak, alongside forwards such as Tom O’Toole, Tom Stewart, Cormac Izuchukwu, and Nick Timoney. Bell noted the strong personal connections he formed during his time in Northern Ireland, citing the cultural similarities between Belfast and Australia as a key factor in his smooth adjustment.
Reflecting on his time in the United Rugby Championship, Bell described the experience as a significant period of growth. He highlighted the diversity of the league, which involves teams from five nations, as a factor that improved his technical skills, specifically regarding scrum variations. Additionally, Bell noted that Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt, who previously managed Ireland, has left a recognizable tactical imprint on the Irish national side. Despite the competitive nature of the upcoming international fixture, Bell expressed deep admiration for his former colleagues, describing them as friends for life.
