Resident doctors at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu have called off their 10-day warning strike. This decision follows promises from the Ogun State government to settle outstanding professional allowances by July 31, 2026.
The association reached this resolution during an emergency congress held Wednesday. Dr. John Omotoso, president of the group, stated that the suspension was prompted by successful negotiations with key state officials, including Secretary to the State Government Tokunbo Talabi and Head of Service Olanrewaju Iskeel Saka, alongside the Nigerian Medical Association leadership.
Healthcare staff have been instructed to return to their duties effective June 25, 2026. However, the association plans to hold an emergency meeting on August 1, 2026, to verify that payments have been processed. Dr. Omotoso emphasized that the union will not tolerate any intimidation or retaliation against staff members for their participation in the walkout.
The strike began after disputes over unpaid professional allowances, unresolved training funds, and poor working conditions. Doctors had highlighted issues such as staff shortages, inadequate facilities, and security concerns at the hospital. The association acknowledged Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration for intervening to restore services and protect training programs.
