The House of Representatives has officially postponed its plenary sessions until July 7, 2026. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas confirmed the break on Thursday, noting that the period concludes the current legislative calendar while providing lawmakers time to examine various constitutional amendment suggestions. Upon their return, these proposals will be prioritized for an immediate vote.
Speaker Abbas noted that the recess also allows members to reconnect with the residents of their respective constituencies. Before concluding the session, the House successfully passed the State Police Bill. A total of 289 legislators voted in support of the measure during the session held under the Speaker’s leadership.
The proceedings were not without tension. Earlier in the day, Representative Bashir Zubairu from Kaduna raised a point of order, arguing that lawmakers had only received the constitutional review committee’s report on state police that afternoon. Zubairu contended that the assembly lacked the necessary time to properly review the document before committing to a vote.
