The Abuja Federal High Court has issued a ruling confirming that former President Goodluck Jonathan is permitted to run in the 2027 presidential election.
This decision follows a recent move by a segment of the Peoples Democratic Party, headed by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, which granted a waiver to Jonathan to serve as the party’s sole presidential nominee.
A lawsuit had been filed by Johnmary Jideobi, who aimed to prevent the former president from seeking candidacy with any political party.
The plaintiff had requested that the court bar the Independent National Electoral Commission from processing or listing Jonathan as a contender.
Central to the legal challenge was an interpretation of the 1999 Constitution regarding term limits and eligibility for the presidency.
However, Justice Peter Lifu dismissed these concerns in his Tuesday verdict, affirming that Jonathan holds the right to participate as a candidate in the upcoming election.
