A total of 38 soldiers serving in the Nigerien Defence and Security Forces have died following two separate raids attributed to suspected Islamic State militants. Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the casualties, highlighting the escalating danger from extremist factions in the region.
The first incident occurred in the Diffa Region at the town of N’Guigmi, resulting in 17 fatalities, including one officer. Shortly after, a second, more intense confrontation took place at a forward operating base in Dankassari, located in the Dosso Region. That assault led to the deaths of at least 21 personnel as militants successfully overwhelmed the outpost.
These violent events on July 31 bring renewed attention to the unstable security landscape across provinces such as Tillabéri and Tahoua. Despite consistent efforts by the military to push back against insurgent groups, violence persists. Records from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project indicate that over 5,800 individuals, including roughly 2,000 security force members, have lost their lives in terror-linked incidents since the July 2023 military coup.
