Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has officially signed the Ondo State Electric Power Sector (Amendment) Law of 2026. This move updates the existing 2020 legislation to match the federal Electricity Act of 2023, creating a more robust framework for power management across the state.
Key additions include the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which will oversee permits, tariffs, and renewable energy initiatives. Additionally, the government has established the State Independent System Operator and the State Market Operator to manage power grid coordination. The law now mandates that electricity providers supply meters to all consumers, ensuring direct billing relationships.
To safeguard infrastructure, the legislation introduces strict penalties for vandalism. Anyone found guilty of sabotaging power equipment faces a fine of N2 million, plus daily surcharges for ongoing violations. Furthermore, the Equipment Standards and Competence Certification Agency will now monitor electrical installations and certify technicians.
The state also bolstered the Ondo State Power Company, allowing it to invest directly in energy projects. Commissioner Johnson Jaiyeola Alabi noted that this update is essential for regional industrial growth, while Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized that stable energy remains a priority for improving local economic conditions.
