Truck accident in Niger State results in 18 fatalities

A heavy-duty truck accident in Niger State has killed 18 people and injured 22 others after the vehicle struck a bridge near Bida.

A severe road accident in Niger State has left 18 people dead and 22 others injured after a heavy-duty truck struck a bridge at Wuya village. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning along the Bida-Mokwa Road in Gbako Local Government Area.

Aishatu Sa’adu, the Niger State Sector Commander for the Federal Road Safety Corps, stated that the truck was transporting 42 passengers alongside a load of goods when the driver lost control at a sharp turn. The vehicle subsequently plunged into the bridge.

Of the 42 people on board, 18 passengers lost their lives immediately. Medical teams are currently treating 22 survivors at the Federal Medical Centre in Bida, while the remains of the deceased have been transported to the hospital mortuary. Two passengers emerged from the wreckage unharmed.

The Sector Commander attributed the tragedy to driver fatigue and warned motorists against operating vehicles while drowsy.
