The Accord Party has formally requested the European Union to implement preventive diplomacy to mitigate rising political tensions in Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election. National Chairman Chief Maxwell Mgbudem emphasized in a letter to EU Ambassador Gautier Migot that international intervention is needed immediately, rather than waiting for electoral violence or institutional damage to occur.
The party raised alarms over reports of intimidation, arrests, and the alleged partisan use of state agencies, which they believe threatens the credibility of the upcoming poll. Specifically, Accord reported 29 deaths related to the current political climate and noted the detention of over 60 of its supporters. Furthermore, the party criticized the freezing of Osun State accounts by the EFCC and the temporary detention of government officials as evidence of a tilted electoral playing field.
Chief Mgbudem clarified that the party does not oppose lawful investigations but insists that state power should not be wielded to suppress political opposition. The party also highlighted a viral video featuring a senator purportedly inciting violence against its members. To safeguard the democratic process, Accord requested that the EU advocate for the neutral application of state authority and monitor the election to ensure it remains free, fair, and transparent.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the party stressed that the integrity of this off-cycle contest is vital for maintaining public trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions. The Accord Party concluded by urging all stakeholders to reject hate speech and intimidation, calling on security forces and the Independent National Electoral Commission to maintain strict impartiality throughout the voting period.
