The Youth Electoral Reform Project (YERP-Naija) has urged the Inspector General of Police and the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission to apprehend individuals encouraging unrest before the upcoming Osun state governorship election. This demand was voiced in a statement released for the 2026 International Youth Day by Abimbola Aladejare-Salako, who represents the organization in the South-West.
Aligning with the global theme of shared goals, the group emphasized that Nigerian youth remain unified in their desire for a transparent and secure voting process on August 15, 2026. While young people in Osun have actively championed democratic participation and electoral reforms, the coalition expressed frustration over inflammatory rhetoric from certain political figures that threatens the stability of the state.
YERP-Naija noted that off-cycle elections provide authorities with sufficient resources to maintain order. They called on security agencies to utilize these assets effectively to ensure compliance with the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act of 2026. Finally, the group encouraged voters to remain peaceful and participate fully, stressing that the entire nation is monitoring the event to ensure it meets established human rights and legal standards.
