After a decade-long career in the NFL, British athlete Efe Obada has officially announced his retirement. Following an unsigned season, the 34-year-old is shifting his focus toward a new personal mission: launching a foundation dedicated to supporting young people in the care system between the ages of 11 and 25.
Obada’s path to professional sports was unconventional. Trafficked to the Netherlands from Nigeria and later abandoned on a London street as a child, he navigated a difficult upbringing in foster care. His entry into American football did not occur until his twenties after a chance meeting with a coach, leading to an eight-year professional run with teams including the Carolina Panthers, Buffalo Bills, and Washington Commanders.
The defensive end, who earned over $8 million during his career, credits his time in the NFL with providing the stability and resources to address his past. Now a British citizen, Obada intends to use his foundation to provide a permanent community hub in south London. He hopes his story will serve as evidence that a challenging childhood does not dictate an individual’s future potential.
