The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the federal government to apprehend and prosecute Islamic preacher Sheikh Yahaya Jingir. The commission cites his recent remarks, which allegedly promote hate speech and religious incitement, as a significant threat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Executive Secretary Chief Tony Ojukwu, SAN, issued a statement on Tuesday following a viral video released on Sunday. In the footage, the cleric reportedly advocated for religious exclusion and referred to others as infidels while urging followers to secure their Permanent Voter Cards. The NHRC stated these comments violate Nigeria’s commitment to equality and peaceful coexistence.
The commission explicitly warned that such rhetoric could spark violence and fracture the nation along religious lines. It emphasized the need for accountability, regardless of an individual’s status, to prevent further inflammatory speech from other influential figures. The NHRC has formally requested that the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services take immediate legal action against the cleric.
Finally, the commission called for a shift toward issue-based politics focused on competence and human rights. It confirmed that it will continue collaborating with security agencies and election officials to ensure the upcoming 2027 electoral process remains stable and free from hate-motivated incidents.
