Salihu Lukman, the former chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), recently asserted that the ruling party lacks any effective democratic framework. During a Monday interview on Trust TV, he suggested that a monarchical government would actually be preferable to the current operations of the APC.
Lukman, who previously exited the APC for the African Democratic Congress before stepping back from that group as well, argues that the ruling party remains arrogant simply because the opposition lacks cohesion. He expressed his initial belief that President Bola Tinubu and his party were genuine democrats during the 2023 cycle, a view he no longer holds.
Highlighting the lack of internal governance, Lukman noted that the party’s National Executive Committee has failed to meet according to its own constitutional mandate of every three months, with the last session occurring approximately half a year ago. He emphasized that for the APC to reform, it must face a credible challenge. Currently, he believes the party feels invincible solely because the opposition has failed to organize a unified front.
