The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is warning the public about cookies and gummies circulating in the market that contain illicit drugs. They urge parents to supervise what snacks their children eat, especially imported items that could harm their well-being.
Femi Babafemi, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, announced on Sunday that traffickers are attempting to bring banned substances into the country disguised as ordinary treats. This follows a significant discovery by the Nigeria Customs Service at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, where two 40-foot containers from the United States were intercepted.
While the containers officially held items like generators, vehicles, and textiles, authorities found thousands of cannabis-infused edibles hidden inside. The street value of these contraband snacks is estimated at N373.8 million. The NDLEA noted that the items were marketed as colorful vegan products. Officials are now investigating the haul, warning that the clever packaging presents a serious danger of accidental consumption by minors.
