Security forces in Kogi State are actively searching for individuals abducted on the Okene-Auchi Road. The ongoing mission involves the police and the Nigerian Army, who are patrolling forested areas near Okene and Ajaokuta to locate the captives.
Authorities have utilized drones to improve aerial surveillance during this mission. According to ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, a spokesperson for the Kogi State Police, the operation was initiated immediately following the kidnapping. Personnel from several units, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the 77 Police Mobile Force, are currently scouring locations such as the Ebiya Forest. The Edo State Police Command has also contributed tactical units to assist at the state border.
During these sweeps, officers discovered and burned down several makeshift camps. Items retrieved from these sites included food supplies, personal identification documents, and military-style headgear. Although no victims have been rescued yet, Commissioner of Police Naziru Bello Kankarofi stated that the search will persist until the hostages are freed and the offenders are caught. Officials have requested that local residents stay vigilant and report any relevant information.
Separately, police have successfully stabilized the community of Abugi following a series of retaliatory attacks. Officers are working with local leaders to foster reconciliation, while the State Criminal Investigation Department is pursuing those responsible for the violence. The command maintains that legal proceedings against the perpetrators will continue despite the return of order.
