Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has stated that the region faces a massive deficit in medical staffing, requiring an additional 40,000 doctors and 40,000 nurses to accommodate its booming population. He further highlighted a N100 billion funding gap that complicates efforts to maintain and improve medical infrastructure.
Addressing the second Eko Health Convention at the Oriental Hotel, the governor noted that the current medical workforce is overstretched, with existing practitioners carrying workloads ten times higher than standard capacity. He emphasized that the state can no longer rely on diminishing international donor support for disease control initiatives.
To combat these issues, the government is focusing on large-scale recruitment across 29 secondary healthcare facilities, enhanced welfare incentives, and the proposed creation of a University of Medicine and Health Sciences. These moves aim to retain local talent while attracting medical professionals currently working abroad.
Progress is also visible in the Ilera Eko health insurance programme, which has reached over 1.5 million enrollees. The scheme is now a cornerstone of the state’s efforts to ensure affordable access to medical services. Furthermore, the Assistance in Distress programme has successfully provided emergency care to 18 individuals since March, prioritizing life-saving intervention regardless of financial status.
The state is also modernizing its medical framework through the Lagos Smart Health Information Platform. This digital initiative, alongside the integration of artificial intelligence for diagnostic support, is intended to centralize patient records and improve long-term strategic health planning across public facilities.
