Security agencies in Nigeria are grappling with a growing crisis where inmates utilize correctional facilities as hubs for illegal operations. Investigations indicate that detainees at centers like Kirikiri, Kuje, and Oko are orchestrating kidnappings, internet fraud, and extortion. These activities are often facilitated by the illicit use of mobile phones smuggled into prison cells, which allow inmates to maintain contact with criminal associates on the outside.
The issue has garnered significant attention following the confiscation of over 1,000 mobile phones and the subsequent sanctioning of 147 correctional officers for involvement in contraband smuggling. Notable cases include convicted fraudster Hope Aroke, who allegedly continued his criminal enterprise from Kirikiri, and claims that inmates from the Warri Medium Security Custodial Centre briefly exited to conduct robberies before returning undetected.
Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has pledged strict disciplinary measures against any staff members who enable these crimes. Authorities are currently exploring the deployment of advanced surveillance technology, including signal jammers and biometric systems, to secure facilities. Security experts suggest that these measures, combined with a comprehensive internal cleanup of the correctional service and improved intelligence sharing between state agencies, are essential to dismantle these internal criminal networks.
