Abia State Governor Alex Otti has officially increased the working hours for the Abia State Traffic and Safety Management Agency and the state’s Harmonized Taskforce. These groups are now required to maintain presence on major roadways until 10:00 p.m. every day, including weekends. The governor announced this mandate during the introduction of 20 additional electric buses at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia.
To support this initiative, Otti instructed the agencies to increase staff levels and resources across key routes, ensuring strict adherence to traffic laws. The governor emphasized that he will establish an independent oversight team to supervise the implementation of this policy. He issued a stern warning to drivers against dangerous driving habits, impatience, and poor judgment, stating that individuals who threaten public safety will face severe consequences.
Regarding the new fleet, the governor urged operators to maintain high standards and avoid vehicle overloading. He praised the progress made in stabilizing the transport sector through the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and highlighted that the electric buses serve a dual purpose: lowering carbon emissions and offering affordable transit options for residents.
