Herman Hembe, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for governor in Benue State, announced on Thursday that he will limit his tenure to a single four-year term if he wins the 2027 election. Hembe stated that this commitment is designed to foster equity and clear the path for the Benue South senatorial district to secure the governorship by 2031.
This announcement took place in Makurdi while he introduced his running mate, John Abba, to a crowd of party members. The event featured notable attendees, including Benue ADC Chairman Sam Okwu, senatorial candidate Dr. David Olofu, and Senator Orker Jev.
Hembe noted that he allowed party leadership to select his running mate to ensure a fair process, resulting in the choice of John Abba. He encouraged supporters to unite behind this decision. Emphasizing the importance of regional balance, he pointed out that Benue South has not yet produced an elected governor, and he believes his single-term pledge prevents further delays to their political aspirations.
Furthermore, Hembe highlighted that the ADC aims to capture multiple elective offices, not just the governorship, noting the necessity of a supportive legislative body. He also expressed optimism regarding the candidacy of Atiku Abubakar and asserted that the party is strong enough to succeed without political coalitions. Finally, he vowed to grant full administrative and financial autonomy to all 23 local government councils upon taking office to improve grassroots development and security.
