The African Democratic Congress has criticized President Bola Tinubu for his recent instruction to the EFCC to unfreeze the accounts of the Osun State Government. The party argues that this directive effectively destroys the narrative that the anti-graft commission functions without interference from the executive branch.
National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi stated that while the party supports the reversal, the President’s explanation creates more concerns than solutions. Specifically, the ADC questions the validity of the court order mentioned by the President and notes that the EFCC previously defended its actions based on its own statutory authority rather than judicial backing. By ordering the agency to back down, the President has inadvertently revealed that the agency follows executive mandates rather than operating as an autonomous body.
The party also expressed concern over the President issuing the directive through a personal statement rather than official government channels, calling it a suspicious approach. The ADC asserts that the EFCC only changed its stance due to massive public outcry, rather than a genuine commitment to justice. They further challenged the President to show similar consistency by intervening in the ongoing case involving former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
