The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) recently held a workshop in Umuahia to educate traditional birth attendants from Abia State on safer pregnancy and delivery management. This initiative aims to bolster maternal and infant health outcomes.
Chief Samuel Ogbuku, the NDDC Managing Director, stated through his representative, Mrs. Dare Olokor Kwame, that these caregivers serve a critical function in remote regions where medical facilities are sparse. The curriculum provided 150 participants from the Abia South Senatorial District with training on postpartum care, financial planning, and identifying potential pregnancy complications.
Ogbuku emphasized that the commission seeks to enhance the efficacy of these practitioners rather than replace them. The goal is to ensure they operate in sanitary conditions and utilize modern, safe methods. Dr. Jude Okpani, a featured lecturer at the event, highlighted the importance of antenatal care and encouraged families to budget properly for medical costs to avoid delays in seeking professional help.
Attendees participated in hands-on demonstrations covering hygiene, nutrition, tool sterilization, and emergency readiness. By fostering these skills, the NDDC hopes to reduce maternal mortality rates throughout the state’s rural communities.
