Struggling with a wrist injury: How long will Carlos Alcaraz be sidelined?

Carlos Alcaraz has been out of professional tennis for nearly four months due to a wrist injury, casting doubt on his ability to defend his US Open title.

Carlos Alcaraz, who reached the pinnacle of tennis by winning his seventh major title at the Australian Open in January, has been absent from competitive play for 114 days. After securing a career Grand Slam by defeating Novak Djokovic, the Spaniard has since missed both the French Open and Wimbledon due to a persistent wrist injury sustained in Barcelona this past April.

His condition, medically identified as tenosynovitis, involves inflammation of the tissue surrounding the wrist tendons, typically caused by repetitive stress. While minor cases respond to rest, Alcaraz’s situation has proven complex enough to require an extended hiatus from using a racket. Following his withdrawal from the upcoming Cincinnati Open, his status for the US Open remains uncertain.

Experts note that wrist injuries are notoriously difficult for tennis players because the joint is critical for both power generation and the fine motor control required for shots like drop volleys. Physiotherapist James Ross highlights that modern tennis equipment and more demanding tournament schedules put significant pressure on these joints, often leading to chronic issues. Players like Dominic Thiem and Juan Martin Del Potro serve as cautionary tales, as their careers were hampered by similar recurring injuries.

Beyond the physical recovery, there is a substantial mental hurdle to overcome. Veteran players often struggle to fully trust their wrist movement after a significant injury. As Alcaraz continues his rehabilitation, the primary challenge remains ensuring that his return is gradual enough to prevent the injury from becoming a permanent setback.
