Nigerian authorities have successfully recovered more than 300 individuals following a major rescue mission, which the presidency has labeled the country’s most significant single-day security effort. The operation took place at Kainji Lake National Park within Niger State, utilizing a coordinated team from the military, police, intelligence services, and the National Counter-Terrorism Centre.
The group of rescued victims includes 163 people taken during a violent February assault on the Woro community in Kwara State, as well as 145 individuals kidnapped in Niger State. While it remains unconfirmed if any perpetrators were captured, the victims are currently undergoing medical evaluation at a military facility prior to returning to their families.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed his approval of the mission, highlighting the 308 rescued citizens as evidence of stronger collaboration between national security branches. Presidential representative Bayo Onanuga emphasized the record-breaking nature of this recovery operation. Security officials have attributed the earlier Woro massacre, where victims were found executed, to the jihadist group Boko Haram, though the group has not officially commented. This event follows the recent release of 44 school-linked hostages in Oyo State, further fueling worries that violent instability is expanding beyond established conflict regions.
