Fourteen-year-old Ekunke Odey Goodness has claimed victory at the first FIDE World Amateur Rapid Chess Championship held in Abuja. By earning 9 points across 11 rounds, the Nigerian youth secured his place in history as the tournament’s inaugural champion.
Fellow Nigerians FM Eugene Ekpoikong Unwana and FM Bomo Lovet Kigigha followed closely, both finishing with 8½ points. After tie-break procedures, Unwana received the silver medal, and Kigigha secured the bronze.
Organized by FIDE and the Nigeria Chess Federation, the event utilized a 15-minute format with 10-second increments. The competition remained highly competitive, with 17-year-old Joseph Sambo posing a significant challenge after defeating Goodness in the eighth round. However, Sambo faltered in the final two rounds, eventually placing fourth with 7½ points.
Unwana navigated a strong finish, including a victory over Sambo, to reach the final round. His draw against Goodness ensured the 14-year-old maintained the top spot. International participation was notable, with India’s Sahil Sanjay Shejal placing fifth. This tournament underscored the growing talent within the Nigerian chess community while providing a global stage for amateur competitors.
