Under the leadership of Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa, the Abia State House of Assembly has officially enacted H.A.B 34, a bill introduced by Deputy Speaker Augustine Okezie and lawmaker Mandela Obasi. This legislation establishes the Abia State Property and Tenancy Regulatory Authority, aimed at shielding renters from unfair practices by landlords and property agents. Crucially, the measure also safeguards property owners against tenants who violate rental agreements or behave unlawfully.
The move follows widespread frustration in Umuahia and Aba regarding soaring residential and commercial rent prices. Tenants in these urban centers frequently reported that agents were colluding with owners to inflate costs artificially. In addition to housing reform, the Assembly passed legislation to streamline the criminal justice system, prioritizing the prompt resolution of cases and ensuring due process for all involved. Furthermore, lawmakers introduced a restorative justice act, which mandates that individuals who harm others within the state must accept accountability for their violent conduct.
