Following a three-hour discussion at the Presidential Villa with the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has opted to pause its planned industrial action. The meeting included various government officials, including the Ministers of Labour and Health, to address the association’s grievances.
NARD President, Dr. Muhammad Suleiman, expressed confidence that the government has provided clear commitments on major issues. These include set timelines for resolving disputes over salaries, promotions, and allowances. A significant outcome is the directive for the payment of salaries for house officers to be completed before the 10th of every month.
The Presidency has further directed the relevant ministries to finalize a Collective Bargaining Agreement in time for inclusion in the upcoming budget. Additionally, the government pledged to enhance security at hospitals to protect staff from violence. Gbajabiamila also committed to pursuing legislative changes to classify physical attacks on health workers as aggravated criminal offenses.
While Dr. Suleiman noted that these discussions have significantly addressed their concerns, he stated that he must consult with the National Executive Council of NARD before formally announcing an end to the strike threat. The association previously intended to begin an indefinite nationwide strike on August 10 if their demands were not met.
