Delta State reveals strategy to activate 3,000MW power capacity and draw investment

Delta State has unveiled a roadmap to utilize 3,000 megawatts of power capacity by establishing new regulatory agencies and inviting private sector investment.

Delta State officials introduced a strategic plan to tap into nearly 3,000 megawatts of existing power capacity. Announced at the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit, the roadmap includes the launch of a state-specific Electricity Regulatory Commission and a Rural Electrification Agency. These institutions are designed to support a legal framework established by the 2024 Electricity Sector Law, aiming to protect consumer interests while ensuring viable returns for private investors.

Mrs. Uche Okafor, a government consultant, emphasized that the state is prepared to facilitate growth across the entire electricity value chain. Industry leaders responded with strong interest. Peter Ikenga of Transcorp Power Ughelli noted that Delta’s significant gas reserves and infrastructure give it the potential to become a regional economic powerhouse. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Jakpa from Manitoba Power pointed out that the primary focus will be resolving distribution bottlenecks that currently leave generated power stranded.

Industrial success was highlighted by Sumeet Singh of PowerGas Nigeria, who pointed to the success of CNG stations in supporting local factories. Furthermore, Engineer Tari Mayo Bright confirmed that the state is collaborating with the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles to set up green hubs and charging stations. Regarding funding, Daniel Muller of InfraCredit stated that Nigeria’s pension funds possess over N31 trillion, providing sufficient capital for bankable energy projects in the state.
