Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has claimed that Archbishop Emeritus John Cardinal Onaiyekan lacked neutrality during the 2023 general elections. Addressing the media in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike rejected the notion that the cleric’s recent critiques of the administration were unbiased.
This response follows remarks made by Onaiyekan after the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria met with President Bola Tinubu. The Cardinal had alleged that the President’s advisors were shielding him from reality while he prioritized his 2027 re-election bid. The Presidency previously criticized the Cardinal for disclosing details of a private discussion.
Wike stated that religious leaders should offer balanced feedback. He argued that consistent negativity without recognizing government accomplishments indicates a political agenda rather than a genuine desire for reform. According to the Minister, public figures should highlight both successes and areas for improvement to maintain credibility.
Refuting claims that the bishops maintained a non-partisan stance, Wike pointed to the 2023 election cycle, asserting that many religious leaders clearly chose political sides. He emphasized that the allegiances of prominent figures were widely known, making it difficult for him to accept assertions of impartiality.
