A severe downpour on Sunday triggered flooding across Malari, Pompomari, and neighboring regions in the Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe State, resulting in two confirmed deaths. The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) released a flash flood report identifying the victims as 38-year-old security guard Isa Haruna and 18-year-old Abba Kyari, who drowned near Pompomari.
The SEMA search and rescue unit, working alongside the Damaturu State Fire Service, recovered the bodies and transported them to the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital mortuary. In response to the tragedy, SEMA has called on parents and guardians to monitor their children strictly during the school holiday period.
To mitigate further risks, the agency outlined six safety guidelines: staying away from inundated roads and waterways, keeping children clear of rivers and drains, and reporting emergencies promptly. Residents are also encouraged to clear blocked drainage systems, monitor weather forecasts, relocate to higher elevations when necessary, and avoid exposure to floodwaters. Officials have not yet determined the extent of the property damage caused by the surge.
