Sage Vincent Ike, a Nigerian residing in the United States, has reported spending over ₦1 million to renew his passport. He attributes this high cost to administrative obstacles, recurring fees, and a four-month delay.
Ike began his renewal process in March 2026 to prepare for upcoming international travel. During his attempt to attend a biometric appointment at the Nigerian Consulate in Atlanta on March 19, he discovered the facility was closed for the Eid-el-Fitr holiday without any prior communication. He managed to complete his biometrics on March 27 after paying $280 in official fees for the passport and a data correction.
After facing significant delays and receiving no response from officials, Ike sought assistance from a retired immigration officer in Nigeria, incurring additional costs of ₦460,000 for various processing fees. Further expenses accumulated when a representative was allegedly asked to pay $150 to collect the document, alongside shipping costs and losses from missed international flights.
Ike described the process as an exhausting experience defined by inefficiency and financial strain. In response, the Nigeria Immigration Service issued an apology for the situation. They clarified that paying for third-party collection is illegal and urged citizens to avoid using unauthorized intermediaries, noting that a signed authorization letter is the only requirement for someone else to collect a passport.
