The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has stepped in to resolve a labor dispute at the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital (FUTATH) in Akure. The government has summoned union leaders to a meeting to prevent a potential shutdown of medical services.
This intervention follows a seven-day ultimatum issued by the Ondo State branches of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Union leaders, including Prince Ademola Olapade and Clement Fatuase, alleged that management violated the agreement established during the hospital’s transition from state to federal control. They specifically accused the administration of breaching the Memorandum of Understanding signed on October 23, 2025.
In response, the Ministry has scheduled a meeting for July 24, 2026, at the hospital boardroom. Mr. Festus Igbinosun will represent the government to address concerns regarding the staff absorption process. Following a rigorous verification exercise involving various federal agencies, 265 staff members were deemed ineligible for federal absorption and were recommended for redeployment to the Ondo State Civil Service. The Ministry maintains that these decisions were based on standardized criteria, including qualifications and service records.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, praised the collaborative effort between the state and federal governments. Observers are hopeful that this upcoming dialogue will settle the grievances and restore stability to the institution’s healthcare and educational operations.
