The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally requested that President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), and the National Assembly clarify the massive financial outlays attributed to energy security. Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, highlighted that the 2024 audited financial statements from the NNPC reveal N7.13 trillion spent on energy security, with total fuel-related costs and receivables pushing that figure to roughly N17.5 trillion.
The ADC argues that such vast spending necessitates transparency. Abdullahi noted the contrast between past public debates over a N48 billion pipeline contract and the current multi-trillion naira expenditures. The party expressed concern regarding contracts awarded to entities like Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd., which is associated with Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo. Given Tompolo’s vocal backing of President Tinubu’s political agenda, the ADC emphasized the need to determine if public resources are being used for national interests or political maneuvering.
The party has called for a detailed disclosure of all surveillance and security contracts issued since the current administration took office in May 2023. This includes reporting on the recipients, exact compensation, measurable outcomes, and any assessments regarding the value of these services. With the public currently facing significant economic hardships such as inflation and rising utility costs, the ADC asserts that the government must justify these substantial outflows of capital to the Nigerian people.
