McLaren driver Lando Norris faces a 10-place grid drop at the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix due to the installation of an additional power electronics unit, exceeding the seasonal limit. This specific component regulates the vehicle’s battery and has proven problematic for several Mercedes-powered teams this year.
The team opted to install this fourth unit, along with the latest iteration of the Mercedes engine, to incorporate critical reliability updates that were missing from Norris’ previous hardware. McLaren chose Spa for this penalty because the track facilitates easier overtaking, making it a strategic trade-off compared to the more difficult-to-pass circuits like Hungary.
This change arrives as McLaren prepares for major aerodynamic updates slated for the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix. The team aims to regain its competitive edge after slipping behind the top-tier teams in recent rounds. Norris previously encountered significant failures with the power electronics component in China, Japan, and Monaco, prompting the switch to the newer, refined unit from Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains.
Additionally, McLaren is debuting a new rear wing design tailored for the high-speed demands of the Belgian circuit. Unlike the recent experimental designs from Ferrari and Red Bull, McLaren is utilizing a conventional opening mechanism for this wing.
