The Nigerian government has secured a $600,000 relief fund along with commitments from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

This donation was announced during a meeting between Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Foundation’s head of Global Development Programme, Dr. Christopher Elias, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The relief fund aims to “hasten relief efforts for victims of the devastating floods, as well as for health and agricultural sector reforms,” according to a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha.

The statement is titled ‘Nigeria Secures $600,000 for Flood Relief, Health, Agric Sectors’ Reforms.’

The announcement follows the Federal Government’s establishment of a Disaster Relief Fund aimed at “building greater resilience” in preventing and responding to natural disasters, particularly floods.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, stated on Monday that the Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) would address the unique threats posed by climate change by pooling resources from a wide range of public and private sector participants and international donors.

Specifically, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged $600,000 for flood relief in Borno State and other health sector initiatives, along with an additional $5 million grant approved for Lagos Business School and partners to develop the agricultural economics of industrial cassava.

Nigeria’s Vice President, Shettima, reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to prioritize health, nutrition, and agricultural development on the national agenda.

“We are deeply committed to addressing the pressing developmental challenges facing our nation, particularly the significant malnutrition crisis,” he stated.
