The Depot Nigerian Army in Osogbo has launched a formal investigation into claims of misconduct by its soldiers. This move follows complaints from the leadership of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) and the South-West branch of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
Major Yahaya Ibrahim, the spokesperson for the Depot, confirmed that the Commandant is reviewing allegations that soldiers raided student hostels, assaulted individuals, and confiscated electronic devices, including over 60 mobile phones. The Army emphasized its commitment to protecting all citizens and stated that any actions deviating from this duty are strictly prohibited. Personnel found responsible for these actions will be held accountable under military law.
The Army has requested that the South-West Coordinator of NANS, Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, provide evidence and witness testimony to assist in the probe. Furthermore, the Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has urged the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, to dismiss and prosecute any recruits implicated in the reported assaults.
