Authorities in Anambra State have rescued 37-year-old Anurika Nweme from a violent crowd after she was accused of attempting to steal an infant from a medical facility. The incident occurred at Divine Mercy Hospital, located on Eze Iweka Road in Awada, Obosi.
According to police reports, Nweme gained entry to the hospital by wearing a nurse’s uniform. Witnesses alleged she was seen recording videos of newborns and communicating via phone regarding the gender of the babies. Hospital staff challenged the woman, who claimed to work there, but management quickly verified that she was not an employee. Following the confrontation, a mob gathered with the intent to harm her before police intervened.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the suspect is currently in protective custody. Police have launched an official investigation to determine if she was part of a larger child trafficking operation. A new mother at the hospital reported that the woman had approached her to inquire about her baby’s gender shortly before the suspect was identified as an intruder.
