Tinubu Orders Mass Rollout of 100,000 CNG Kits to Slash Transport Costs
President Bola Tinubu has authorized the immediate distribution of 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits across Nigeria to mitigate the rising cost of fuel.
This directive, announced on Tuesday, March 10, following a briefing at the State House, is a strategic response to global oil market instability caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Ismaeel Ahmed, Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), stated that the rollout is expected to be completed within three weeks. The initiative targets vehicle owners and commercial tricycle operators, providing them with a more affordable alternative to petrol and diesel.
Alongside the kit distribution, the President ordered an accelerated expansion of refueling and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with a particular focus on the “Northern Corridor” transit routes linking Lokoja to Maiduguri.
The government is currently developing a network of 77 refueling stations, including operational liquefied gas facilities in Kano.
To sustain this transition, the administration is partnering with local and international manufacturers to encourage the domestic assembly of CNG and electric vehicles.
Furthermore, the initiative is collaborating with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to establish solar-powered charging hubs in off-grid areas, ensuring that cleaner energy options reach every part of the country.
