At least 14 people have died in Nepal after nationwide protests against a government social media ban spiraled into violent clashes with security forces.

Thousands of young demonstrators, largely from Generation Z, flooded the streets of Kathmandu after authorities blocked 26 platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, and WhatsApp. Waving the national flag, protesters gathered near parliament, chanting slogans such as “End the social media ban, fight corruption instead.”

The rallies, which began peacefully, turned deadly when police fired on crowds attempting to storm the parliament building. Security forces also used water cannons, rubber bullets, and batons to push back demonstrators.

Communication Minister Prithvi Subba told the BBC that officers were ordered to use force to restore calm. In response, officials have imposed a curfew in several parts of Kathmandu.

The government enacted the sweeping restrictions after social media firms failed to meet a registration deadline. Officials argue the move is aimed at tackling fake news and online fraud, but critics contend it curtails free expression and disproportionately affects the country’s youth.

The unrest has been labeled a “Gen Z protest,” with younger citizens spearheading resistance against what they view as censorship and excessive state control. Tensions remain high, with fears of more violence if the standoff continues.
