U.S. Warns Nigerian Visa Applicants Against Birth Tourism
The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned that visa applications will be denied if it is suspected that the applicant’s main reason for travel is to give birth in the U.S. for the sake of securing American citizenship for their child.
This warning was shared on Monday via the Mission’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, @USinNigeria, as part of a broader public awareness campaign tagged with the hashtags #VisaWiseTravelSmart and #USVisa.
“Using your visa primarily to give birth in the U.S. for citizenship purposes is not allowed. If consular officers believe that is your intent, your visa will be denied,” the post emphasized.
An accompanying graphic reiterated this message, making it clear that birth tourism is not permitted under U.S. immigration rules and will result in visa refusal.
The move underscores the U.S. government’s effort to curb visa abuse and ensure compliance with immigration policies.
