National Assembly Sends Harmonised Tax Reform Bills to President Tinubu for Assent
The National Assembly has officially forwarded the long-awaited tax reform bills to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his signature, marking the final step before the proposed changes become law.
Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), who chairs the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, confirmed the development during a press briefing in Abuja.
The bills, originally submitted by President Tinubu earlier in 2024, were designed to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system. They underwent intense scrutiny and debate in both the Senate and the House of Representatives before a unified version was adopted by both chambers on May 25, 2025.
“It’s now out of our hands and on its way to the President,” Senator Adaramodu stated, confirming the transmission.
He explained that the delay in forwarding the bills stemmed from the need for careful legal review. “Tax legislation demands rigorous examination. Legal teams from both chambers needed to confirm that the provisions aligned with existing laws before we could transmit them,” he said.
Adaramodu also noted that, after harmonization, the Clerk of the National Assembly must prepare the final draft for approval, which then requires signatures from both the Senate President and the Speaker of the House.
Once signed into law, the tax reforms are expected to significantly enhance government revenue and simplify Nigeria’s often cumbersome tax structure.
